Internship Program Admissions Process

Applicants must be doctoral students enrolled in an APA-accredited graduate program in Counseling or Clinical Psychology. Academic coursework and preparation must be in accordance with APA accreditation standards. To be considered for the AHWC psychology internship, applicants should meet the following requirements:

1. Comprehensive examinations must be passed before applying for internship.
2. Candidates must document a minimum of 400 direct service (intervention) hours prior to submitting their application.
3. All required coursework must be completed prior to the start of internship.
4. Applicants must have successfully proposed their dissertations prior to the start of internship.
5. Current applicants will need to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or submit to weekly testing per NMSU HR policy. 

Preference will be given to applicants who have received live or taped supervision at some point in their practicum training. The Center values diversity and encourages applicants of diverse ethnic, racial, age, religious, sexual orientation, and other backgrounds to apply.

Successful applicants will demonstrate a strong interest in providing psychotherapy and other mental health services to college students, particularly within a multi-culturally diverse setting. They are typically interested in increasing their breadth of knowledge and clinical experience not only in individual and group psychotherapy, but also in outreach, assessment, consultation, and the provision of supervision.

Intern Selection Process

– Applicants invited for Zoom interviews will be notified via email by the second week of December 
– Zoom interviews will be conducted appx in early to Mid-January 2022
– Per APPIC, Phase 1 Match Day is February 18th, 2022 at 10amEST

Application Review
We review all internship applications through the APPI Online. Your application will be screened using a predesigned metric to ensure applicants meet minimum requirements. Applications will then be carefully evaluated by the internship selection committee to assess for fit prior to an offer for an internship interview.

Following the application you will be notified by email that we would like to offer you a teleconference interview (using Skype or Zoom) or that, unfortunately, we will not be able to offer you an interview.

Reference Checks
AHWC may contact references provided on the APPI throughout the selection process for clarification or additional information, if needed.

Zoom Interviews
During the first and second week of January, we will conduct Zoom interviews for selected applicants. These interviews usually last approximately 75-80 minutes.  These interviews allow for an approximately 45-50 minute long interview with the internship selection committee and then an approximately 20 minute interview with current interns. Interviews are semi-structured with standardized questions from our staff, allowing time in the end of the interview for applicants to ask questions of their own.

In recognition of the fact that we are site that is geographically isolated with a distinct emphasis on social justice, we do not offer in-person interviews to any applicant. Our goal is to ensure that all applicants have the same interview experience, without having to consider the potential burden of costs associated with travel. The AHWC adheres to all APPIC internship selection policies and does not solicit, accept, or use ranking-related information from any intern applicant.

Open House
For internship applicants who would like to visit our site, we will host an open house, TBD, the end of January. This open house is an opportunity for applicants to learn more about our site and campus, as well as to explore the greater Las Cruces, NM, area.  The open house is not considered part of the formal interview process, and is provided as an opportunity for applicants to generate less-formal information about our community before they secure their rankings. The open house is typically a half-day experience at the AHWC, and includes a brief tour and presentation of services provided of the AWHC, a tour of the NMSU campus, and an off-site meal with interns and trainees.

Match Day: February 18th, 2022
APPIC will provide internship sites and internship applicants information regarding internship placements via email. If you match with AHWC you will receive an informal telephone call from the training director, followed by a formal offer letter in accordance with APPIC policies.
